My artwork refers to the painting of the famous renaissance artist El Greco – “The Burial of the Count of Orgaz”. The idea of repainting this art piece consists of multiple reasons.
My painting reproduces familiar visual dramatic, and emotional qualities which express the mystical event of a funeral. Being strongly influenced by the latest events related to the death of thousands of people as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, I have chosen this subject of matter to re-explore relationships between mystical and spiritual life.
The choice of a renaissance painting has a symbolic character. My artwork is a form of contemplation on the need for the rebirth of art, as once it reawakened in Italy.
It’s a reflection on the replacement of some characteristics of modern art such as new, different, and ugly with profound, interesting, and beautiful.
