After El Greco

The Burial of the Count of Orgaz is a charcoal interpretation of El Greco’s celebrated composition, conceived as an exercise in close looking and pictorial translation.

The work examines the extraordinary structure of El Greco’s image: the earthly ceremony compressed below, the visionary realm opening above, and the continuous vertical movement that binds the two worlds together. Rather than attempting to reproduce the original painting literally, the drawing asks what remains when colour, glaze and painterly atmosphere are removed and the composition is reconstructed through line, tonal density and the physical immediacy of charcoal. The process became a study of how spiritual meaning is carried through composition itself — through hierarchy, gesture, compression, ascent and the tension between the corporeal and the transcendent. In this sense, the drawing functions both as homage and as analysis: a way of entering the architecture of an historical image in order to understand how its visual and theological force is constructed.
